I hope my readers had a good weekend. Friday Travalon and I
went for a long boat ride, but it was very windy so the boat got tossed around
quite a bit. It was a little more exciting than either of us really liked! We
were trying to get to the Tenney Locks, but we decided to stick close to the
shore, and that way we got to explore Warner Bay. It was such a beautiful day.
In the evening we went to the Hop Garden for their fish fry. It was outside,
and they had a fire pit blazing and a band playing. We won’t get too many more
outdoor meals this year so we have to enjoy them while we can. Their pumpkin
beer was delicious.
Saturday Travalon had gotten really affordable tickets to
the Badger football game, and we thought they were perfectly good seats – a little
on an angle, but we could see the whole field clearly. The Badgers trounced
Maryland. At one point during halftime, they presented an award to a young
woman, and then her boyfriend dropped to his knees in front of her, and she nodded
yes! We had taken the Come Back In bus to the game, so afterwards we had a
snack there, then we took a much shorter boat ride into the marsh. We saw a
muskrat house, and when I said I thought they were called “lodges,” Travalon
said, “It’s the muskrat lodge, resort, and conference center,” which I thought
was hilarious. Then we noticed a whole bunch of other muskrat lodges – a whole
muskrat village! We ended the evening with delicious pizza from Murphy’s,
overlooking the marsh.
Yesterday the weather was much worse, cooler and it rained
all day. We stayed inside and watched the Packer game with high hopes for
Hundley as quarterback. The first half he looked really good and even scrambled
for a touchdown, but then the second half the defense fell apart and the
offense couldn’t get anything going. It’s like McCarthy doesn’t trust Hundley
to throw, even though he had the most completed passes in UCLA history, or
something like that. They will have to try something different next week for
sure. Then Travalon and I went for a hike at Kegonsa State Park, despite the
drizzle, and after that we drove around the lake and discovered a park that
used to be a carp farm in the 30’s. I said I thought it was the spot where Rich
and I ended our epic canoe trip down the Yahara many years ago. So I have been
up the Yahara to where Token Creek splits off, and down it to where it empties
into Lake Kegonsa. There is a lot more of it both north and south to explore.
Maybe next summer…
