I hope my readers had a good weekend. Travalon and I met OK
Cap for a fish fry at Union Corners Brewery on Friday night, and we realized it
has been awhile since we went out for a fish fry. Why bother when Travalon is
so talented at cooking fish? But it was fun to get out for once, and the beer
was good, as was the fish. I especially liked the coleslaw flavored with
fennel.
Saturday morning Travalon and I met Rich and Jilly Moose for
coffee, then Rich bid us adieu before we three went to the International
Festival. What a great way to spend Leap Day! We saw the balalaika orchestra
that we had seen perform back around Christmas, and then we saw a guy with a
guitar performing Cuban music. Hardingfele and OK Cap showed up after that, and
we tried to get some lunch, but the food area was packed, so we went out to the
food carts. Jilly Moose had to head to work, while the rest of us sat up on the
top balcony, enjoying the sunshine and a French jazz band. Travalon went to the
Veterans’ Museum while we ladies shopped (I bought a little giraffe from a
Tanzanian stand and a Hmong ornament, and Travalon got a turtle from a First
Nation stand), then we returned to the top balcony to enjoy an Afro-Cuban salsa
band. Travalon and I wanted to get outside to enjoy the lovely sunshine, so we
hiked at Pheasant Branch and then had tea at Common Ground, and then we ran
some errands before dinner at Amber Indian restaurant. What a wonderful extra
day!
Yesterday after Mass, Travalon and I joined Rich and the
other bass for brunch at Tutto Pasta, then he and I went to Sauk. Of course we
saw no eagles, since it was over 50 degrees F out, but it was a lovely day for
a walk at the VFW Park. Then we drove to Devil’s Lake and walked out on the
ice, since there were tons of other people out on it so we figured it had to be
safe. We went to another place called Baxter’s Hollow, but it was too snowy. We
will have to check it out in the good weather. Then we checked out some bluffs
in the area. In the evening Rich hosted a birthday party for Prairie Man, and
he and Kathbert made an angel food cake for him. It was a lot of fun, and
Travalon and I were pleasantly surprised to see a couple we know from Slow Food
there. The Rosary Ladies were there too. Rich decided to take a picture of the
gathering, so he set his camera up to take a picture with a delay so he could
get into position, but to everyone’s surprise he just sat back down with his
back to the camera. What came out was a picture of the back of his head, with
everyone else out of focus. Check it out:
We all laughed so hard! I said this should be the photo for his obituary, since it sums him up perfectly: surrounded by friends but totally goofy. Then he said he already has a photo chosen for his obituary! That is more planning than I have put into such matters. He did concede that at that point he won't have much say over it if we decide to replace that one with this one. And speaking of death, we forgot to put flowers on Mr. Why's grave yesterday, since it was the 11th anniversary of his death. Oops! We will have to get around to that sometime soon...
