Quit Worshiping Candidates

 

It seems to me, from reading and from observation, that what so many of these Trump cultists are freaking out about is an existential crisis rather than a political one. So many of them seem to have wrapped their feelings about Trump up in some sort of religious vision, in which he was ordained by God to win the presidency, so that if he lost the election, their whole spirituality is thrown into doubt. I mean, I was like, "God, WHY?" when Trump won in 2016, but then I remembered we humans have free will, so it wasn't God's fault. Anyway, I never considered Hillary any sort of savior, just a vastly superior choice for the office of president. But if you really consider Trump some sort of Messiah figure and think he is divinely appointed to lead this country, it makes sense that you would freak out that he lost the election. And I guess it would also make sense that you don't think your fellow citizens have just as much right to choose the next president as you do. (A person I know was arguing on social media with some other people about whether the election was stolen, and he sort of conceded that it wasn't, but that the people who voted for Biden were deeply deluded so it was okay to override their decision. Wow, THERE'S a constitutionally sound argument: "More than half the country is insane, so we have to let my side win." And this from the guy who's on the side of the people who are overrunning the Capitol while wearing horns and face paint and not much else. Shrug.) Maybe it throws the whole existence of God into doubt for you, and so you pivot from that thought to the thought that all Democrats, any sane Republicans, the media, other countries, and anyone else who doesn't worship Trump must be evil. This is what happens when people put their religious hope in secular institutions and in individual people who are not Jesus. Then they wave banners about Jesus as they do atrocious things, and that turns off normal people. It's really a shame, because the actual Jesus is amazing, but who's going to get to know Him when they see alleged followers of His acting like this???
