Travalon's Mother's Birthday Party

This morning Travalon and I drove to Oconomowoc to join two of his brothers, one sister-in-law, and his nephew for his mother's birthday party. She will be 96 on Tuesday, but we celebrated today with plain cheesecake, which is her favorite. Travalon gave her a book about the Milwaukee neighborhood she grew up in. It's amazing that he found something like that. The sister-in-law and I keep talking about writing a book based on the amazing life of Travalon's cousin, who would have been 98 (I think) on the 5th (we think). She was Travalon's father's first cousin, but she was very close to his mother. They always said I was part of the "Capricorn club" too. The cousin just died last year, and we're not sure if we have enough of the story, so we might make it a novel based on true events. We'll see if this comes to pass...

Then Travalon and I went to Watertown and took a walk downtown, since it was sunnier there than on the island. It was cold, but not intolerable in the sun. We had lunch at Literatus, the little bookstore/coffee place in town. Then we came back to town and went to East Towne Mall, since Travalon needed new sneaks (so do I, but I'm putting it off since the old ones are so comfortable), and I wanted to get something at JC Penney that I hadn't been able to get last night, when they closed an hour before the Mall and I missed my chance. Check it out.

Travalon usually parks outside of JC Penney whenever we walk there, so I kept passing this ring. It's not a super valuable one - it's sterling silver, and the opal and pink sapphire are lab-created - but it has a strong sparkly unicorn vibe, and so I fell in love with it. And it turns out that it was on sale, so it was even less than the posted price! Here is a clearer photo of it, but the colors aren't as good in artificial light as in sunlight.

We also buy things we don't need at all, like this llama tree topper and the "Small World After All - Kenya" Funko Pop.

The llama was ridiculously cheap because it was a "Christmas" item, being an alleged tree topper, but only after we brought it home did I read the box carefully - it doesn't light up! What?? Why did we pay next to nothing for a gold llama that doesn't light up? It's still cute, and so is the Kenya Funko Pop. I love the outfit.

We watched the Packers game we had recorded (of course they FINALLY had a noon game the one time we couldn't watch a noon game), and the starters played the first half, then they put Jordan Love in for quarterback. He was mostly fine except for two interceptions, and if the defense had stopped the Lions in the last four minutes, the Pack would have won, but they allowed ten points in that short amount of time!! That's what is going to make me lose more sleep than Jordan Love's turnovers. After all, Favre threw tons of interceptions, but he was still a Hall of Fame quarterback. Rodgers does turn over the ball less than anybody in the game, but interceptions are not as big of a problem if the defense is running on all cylinders. I'm not sure what was going on today. Hopefully they just decided to phone it in because this was a game the Packers didn't need to win, and they will show up for the playoffs. But what if this is really how they play? Yikes! The Lions did have some cool trick plays, like throwing instead of punting on fourth down, but the defense needs to be ready for that nonsense. We're not getting to the Super Bowl without defense.
