Today was another lovely day, although quite windy. I worked from home, and on my morning break I went down to the dock and saw Tux Duck, a male northern shoveler, and some buffleheads. Later in the day they weren't around, but that might have been partly because there was a boat anchored just off our dock with two guys fishing. I also saw the cranes quite a bit, and during one of my walks, two other people were walking closer to one of the cranes, so it bugled at them. The man (isn't it always the man?) tried to do an imitation back at it, very loudly, and the crane was getting more and more agitated, but the guy JUST WOULDN'T STOP. I had to go back to work, so I didn't see how that whole thing ended, but it struck me as rude, not to mention risky. Cranes are just updated dinosaurs, and I wouldn't want to tangle with one myself. When I was young, I would make animal noises back at the animals, and when they responded, I imagined we were having a conversation, but as an adult I realize they are probably just getting angry, and this man was fully grown and really should have known better. Now when I converse with animals, I speak to them calmly in English and try to understand what they are telling me without condescending to them by pretending to speak their language, and that seems to work. I generally have good relationships with animals, including the cranes in our neighborhood. They all know who I am, and they have never hassled me, although they allegedly have harassed some of our neighbors. Who knows? Maybe they were yelling at them in Crane Language.
For some reason I never posted this video from October, when we went to GLEAM at Olbrich Gardens.
Not sure why I didn't post it. Isn't it beautiful? Even the music in the background is very soothing.
It was a very quiet day at work. Next week is spring break, and I think everyone had already checked out.
