Fall Colors at Devil's Lake and Astronomy Party

Yesterday Travalon told me he has today and tomorrow off of work, so I asked my boss, who didn't care if I took both days off, and my sort-of boss, who said, "Work from home in the morning on Thursday and then take off." That seemed fair, so this morning I worked really hard and cranked out a bunch of expense reports, then Travalon and I drove to Devil's Lake to get some more miles on the Ice Age Trail and admire the glorious fall colors. We hiked all the way around the lake. Here are photos.

We took the Merrimac Ferry back as the sun was setting, but because there were only three cars, the ferryman made us all go on one side, and the side of the ferry blocked our view of the sunset. Then we drove to Schumacher Farm Park in Waunakee for an astronomy party. It started inside with a talk, and to my surprise, one of my colleagues I've never mentioned on this blog was there. (She's from FART 5.) After the talk, which was very much geared toward children, we all piled outside and gathered around the telescopes. The kids were very excited but did behave very well and didn't touch the telescopes. We looked at a binary star, Comet Lemmon, the Andromeda Galaxy, and our old buddy Saturn. Some people had brought food, which made Travalon hungry, so he ran across the street to Culver's and brought me back a Curder Burger. (According to my diet app, I had already worked it off.) Yid Vicious were playing for free at the North Street Cabaret tonight, but after hiking five miles, we didn't have the energy for that. I think we did enough for one day.
