Getting to Mass in Missouri: Not for Amateurs

This morning in Jackson, Tennessee, we got coffee at the Green Frog Coffee Company. Their mascot is Cotton, the frog with the very soft heart. I took a photo of her, but for some reason my computer Boethius would not let me airdrop the photos from my phone, so I airdropped them to Travalon's phone and then tried to airdrop them from that phone to Boethius, but it still didn't work. At some point these photos will appear, and then I will post them. On the way out of town we passed Union University. Here are a couple of photos, of The Fred, their gym, and something called "Logos," which looks like a main building.

Most of our drive today was in Missouri. We kept seeing billboards for Lambert's, the "home of the throwed rolls," and Travalon said his sister-in-law raved about the rolls, so we stopped there. It was so crazy that we decided not to eat but just get the rolls to go. As we sat there waiting for our rolls, we saw the waiters throwing them to customers, so we realized "throwed" had nothing to do with the baking process and everything to do with the dining experience. Still, even not getting them "throwed" to us, we enjoyed them very much. Also, they are in my diet app, if you can believe it.

Here are photos of the interior of Lambert's.

Then we went for a hike at Trail of Tears State Park. We had to drive forever off the highway to get to it... and then the Visitor's Center was closed for the season. We did find a steep trail that reminded us of the Ice Age Trail back home.

Only it had a view of the Mississippi.

There was also Lake Boutin.

We stopped for pizza at the Li'l Country Store, and we tried to find a Mass we could get to, and there seemed to be one at a church called St. Joseph's, but when Travalon saw this sketchy bridge, he said absolutely not.

We did find one in St. Genevieve, at their beautiful church called St. Genevieve. The parish was founded in 1759, so almost two decades before this country was founded. There was a very winding road to get to it, and we were a little late because of our detour to try to find St. Joseph's, but we made it in time for the Gospel reading. It was a surprisingly short Mass, and people cleared out very fast afterwards. Of course my photos of the church are who knows where, other than on my phone, so I will post those when they appear. Travalon took some photos of downtown St. Genevieve. (He took photos of the church too, but I didn't airdrop those because I had my own.)

We continued north, passing through St. Louis after dark. I got okay photos of the Arch and the Old Cathedral from the moving car. (I have never been in the Old Cathedral, only the new one.) We stopped for dinner at a family restaurant in Troy with a huge photo of St. Teresa of Calcutta right as you walk in the door, since the owners are Albanian. My salmon was good, and Travalon's steak was amazing, but we made the mistake of ordering a strawberry shortcake for dessert because it sounded so good, and then it was just a strawberry cake. (Cue sad trombone.) Otherwise, highly recommended. Finally we got to our hotel in Hannibal, the hometown of Mark Twain, and it's built into a hillside so we had to go up a scary outdoor staircase to get to our floor. We should have just gone in the front door and used the elevator. I believe that's what we'll do tomorrow when we leave. This is our last night in a hotel - it will be good to get back to our own bed! Still, this has been a lot of fun.
