Sorry that I didn't blog yesterday, but after working from home, I went to the East Side Club with Travalon to watch the Packers play the Eagles in Sao Paolo, Brazil. The Packers barely lost because they had so many penalties, and maybe they really are that undisciplined, but it was frustrating that the penalties were always when they had some momentum... as if someone wanted to make sure they lost. Like, if they held the Eagles to Fourth Down, then you can bet they got a penalty so the Eagles got a fresh set of downs. And they even had two touchdowns called back because of penalties. The Eagles got a lot less penalties, and one actually helped them, because it was when the Packers had just gotten the extra point after a touchdown the refs actually let stand, so then the Pack were closer and decided to go for a two-point conversion, but the Eagles stopped them. Things that make you go... hmmm. At least there was a beautiful sunset.
Today Travalon and I had a very relaxed Saturday morning, and I did a lot of DuoLingo. I got this sticker, but I don't really know what it means:
We took a short hike on Governor's Island, then we headed to the Northside Festival to check it out. Two years ago was the first one, and it was kind of lame. Last year we were surprised that they held it again, and it was even lamer, but there were some really delicious kebabs there. This year it was much more lively, and there were some kebabs, but they were different kebabs and still good but not quite as good. Little Tibet was there too, so I had some dumplings, and we got a gift bag because we are Co-op members, and to our delight the bag contained a can of sparkling grapefruit soda, so we didn't need to buy a drink. Travalon got a fried chicken sandwich that he said was almost as good as Zippy Lube's. I also ran into a coworker from my first job on campus many years ago - I'm surprised he could recognize me, since I've gained so much weight since then. I got a cardboard bendy bus (that does not bend), and we got some bubbles that we blew. Another stand was giving out free little bottles of water, so we got more beverage. And the gift bag from the Co-op had some great stuff in it. The Co-op stand also had a "produce piano," and I figured out how to play "Mary Had a Little Lamb" on the pepper, cucumber, orange, lemon, and eggplant before realizing that there was "music" showing how to play that exact song, and also "Ode to Joy." I did redeem myself by figuring out more of "Ode to Joy" than they had written out. There was also an ice cream truck playing usual ice cream truck music like, "You Are My Sunshine," and then random things like "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas." Don't they realize early September is Halloween time, not Christmas time? At least, judging by Walgreens, since we had to stop there on the way home.
Our next stop was Greek Fest, which is at Assumption Orthodox Church. People were dancing when we first got there, and I wanted to join, but Travalon really wanted their special Greek coffee. Then we got in line to get pastries; I really wanted galektoboureko, which is like cheesecake wrapped in phyllo dough, and we ended up getting a ton of other things too, but we ate our Greek cheesecake first and then were too full to eat real food, so we got some to go. We did try the tiropita (they had a much longer name for it), which were these triangles of phyllo dough full of cheese, and oh were those amazing! Travalon said something silly that I can't remember, and when I said, "Huh?" he said, "I must be feelin' the phyllo dough!" so I said that would be an excellent blog post title. I did borrow his Greek T-shirt to wear there.
