Football: A Handy Metaphor for Everything

As my longtime readers know, I am a Packer Backer. Twice a year the Packers play the Bears, and sometimes they win, but sometimes the Bears prevail. Since this has been going on for over a century, the score is fairly even right now, the Bears having been dominant in the 80's but the Packers being the better team for the last couple of decades. Every time the Bears beat the Packers, I am sad for a day or two, then I shake myself off and think, "We'll get them next time!" And in this metaphor we did! We beat the Bears! But then... the Bears team and the fans said it was because the refs were giving points to the Packers and taking them away from the Bears. The tapes of the game were reviewed extensively, and no evidence was found to back up this assertion, so we Packer fans went on rejoicing. Then the Bears fans overran the NFL headquarters and insisted that the score of the game be changed to show that the Bears won. And then, oddly enough, the Bears fans wondered why the Packers fans hated them with the white heat of a thousand burning suns, and they babbled about "unity." What is the point of playing football if the Bears "win" whether they win or lose? There is no point - football ceases to have any meaning. It's no longer a game but just an award handed to the Bears twice a year for nothing.

A commenter on a WaPo article said, "The only good Republican is an oxymoron." You start to wonder.
