Bogo Donuts

Travalon and I had a relaxed morning as he watched Wolverhampton... who won! I can't understand the British announcers' accents; at one point I thought they said, "That was a lovely dolphin kill!" but I was sure I'd misheard... until it sounded like they said something else about a dolphin. What does the English Premier League have to do with dolphins??

We took a lovely, if cool and breezy, hike the other direction on the Lapham Peak segment of the Ice Age Trail. The colors were marvelous, and we kept seeing pretty blue birds with rust-colored breasts, but they were too quick for Travalon to get a photo. Then we saw a sign that bluebirds are common there in the fall, so the blue birds were, in fact, Eastern bluebirds. It makes me think of a social media post where the person said, "I hate ornithologists!" and she shared a screenshot of a Google search of "What do you call a black bird with a yellow head?" and the answer was "Yellow-headed blackbird."

We met Tiffy at the usual Park and Ride in Milwaukee and went to a Caribbean restaurant in West Allis that Travalon had found online called McCoco's. We all got the mofongo, a side dish of plantains and chicharrones which they called the McFongo, but with different meat: I got the chicken breast, Tiffy got the steak, and Travalon got the chicken wings. None of us could finish our mofongo because we had also had yucca sticks and empanadas for appetizers. They gave us free dessert: a tiny scoop of a pudding that Tiffy thought tasted like banana while I thought it tasted like corn, and the waitress confirmed that it was a sweet corn pudding. I took some photos. These are light-up angel wings across from a mirror, which seems to imply you are supposed to take a selfie of yourself with angel wings. Challenge accepted!

The ceiling had cotton over neon lights, kind of a cool effect.

And they also had these crazy palm tree sculptures.

By the time we left it was raining, so we decided to get a warm beverage. The coffee place was across from a shop advertising "Bubble waffles," but we were too full to find out what that would entail, even though we were terribly curious. I said it sounded like they were just stringing random nouns together, like "Diamond donuts," and Tiffy laughed, so I had to tell her about the BOGO donuts:

Some years ago, I saw a sign advertising "BOGO Donuts!" so I went into the shop and said I'd like to try a bogo donut.

Donut Guy: "Sure, what kind of donut would you like?"

Me: "A bogo donut."

DG: "But what flavor of donut?"

Me: "Bogo."

DG: ...

DG: "You do realize BOGO means Buy One, Get One, right?"

Me: ...

Me: "Thanks, I don't need any donuts."

Tiffy really laughed at that story! We all ended up getting the same thing at the coffee shop, pistachio matcha lattes. Then Travalon dropped us off at a concert at beautiful St. Joseph's Chapel.

The music was sacred polyphony, mostly from the Renaissance, but there were two modern pieces, which seems odd for a series called "Early Music Now." However, they were good for modern music and fit into the spirit of the concert. Most of the pieces were settings of the Lamentations of Jeremiah, but the final one was a nine-section description of the Crucifixion. Usually these concerts are two hours long, but this one was short with no intermission, so Travalon was caught off-guard when I told him we were done. He was at a shop that sells nothing but Funko Pops! He got ones of Rocky and Apollo Creed from the Rocky movies. We weren't that hungry yet, so we went to a Thai restaurant called Bamboo for something light; I had pho soup. There used to be a restaurant in Madison called Pho King Good, but the owner changed the name because too many people do not have a sense of humor, and they complained about it. Even in Madison! I thought just about anything goes here.

On the way home, Travalon and I listened to Paul Simon on his phone. I really feel that Graceland and Marvin Gaye's What's Goin' On are the two most spiritual albums of non-religious music that I know. If I'm ever in a coma and you play "Boy in the Bubble" for me but I don't react, you might as well pull the plug - I'm gone.

Here are photos Travalon took on our hike today. Some of these might look similar because we couldn't remember on the way back if he'd already taken a photo, and the scenery was so beautiful that he just took it again.

We are very close to being done with the Mammoth Hike Challenge now, since we got fifteen bonus miles. Now we only need four miles, which is two for each of us, so maybe we can knock them out tomorrow.
