Columbia Lake

Today was so beautiful that I had to take the afternoon off to be outside. As soon as I got off of work at 11:45, Travalon and I were out the door and heading to Columbia Lake, to finish walking on the path we started on Sunday. The lake has a path along the west side, leading up to the power plant that provides electricity for the area.

We were not the only ones on the path!

This is looking back down the path toward the direction we came from.

And this is a small island on the east side of the lake. You can't get there unless you work for the power plant.

On the other side of the path is a wetland between the lake and the Wisconsin River.

We went as far as we could, but there was a sign saying we couldn't go any further if we weren't authorized. Beyond this sign we could see Duck Creek.

In the wetland there was an area that was streaked beautifully with blue and green. It's probably some toxic cyanobacteria, but it sure is aesthetically pleasing.

The reason I had wanted to go back to Columbia Lake, other than to finish walking the path, was that we had seen two sandhill cranes and a great blue heron on Sunday, when it was so cold. We thought on a beautiful day we would see lots of birds, but the heron was nowhere to be seen. We did see a crane on the path far ahead of us, well beyond where we were allowed to go. We also saw a mature bald eagle, with a white head and tail, soaring overhead. Then a little later we saw an immature bald eagle right above us. Travalon took a picture. (He took all these pictures.)

But mostly what we saw today were Canada geese, including three adorable goslings.

We ended up walking five miles and getting back to the car about 2:20, so we just went up the road to Hooker's Resort and got takeout bluegill, which we ate in the park overlooking the river. We also split a cocktail. Day drinking in the sunshine on a workday is the best! It always feels slightly naughty, even if I do have permission to be off of work. Then we drove along Lake Wisconsin and got home not long before I had to leave for adoration. What a wonderful afternoon off!
