The Ant and the Grasshopper: The Real Story

(Based on a true story.)

Once there was an ant who worked hard all summer to put aside food for the winter. There was also a grasshopper who fiddled around, got in lots of trouble, and blamed it on other insects, but he didn't put away any food for the winter. When the winter came, the grasshopper came begging for the ant to help him, and the ant felt sorry for him. The ant was puzzled, however.

"I thought you were against the idea of every insect putting a little into a fund to help any insect down on his luck," he said. "That would have helped you now."

"Absolutely not!" proclaimed the grasshopper proudly. "That's socialism! Why should I have to give any of what I had to help someone who didn't prepare well? Whereas I am just an insect down on his luck, not someone who mooches off the government."

Then the grasshopper ate all the ant's food, so the ant starved. The grasshopper hopped off to find another industrious ant to mooch off of, and if anyone called him a hypocrite, he said, "No, YOU'RE the hypocrite!" but he could never quite explain why. It had something to do with the strange grasshopper radio station he listened to all day, and the grasshopper websites he read all day that convinced him that you can't be a hypocrite as long as you aren't a socialist.
